Building Climate Resilience through Technology
Empowering Communities through IoT, AI and Water Monitoring
At Geotek Water Solutions, we are transforming water access in sub-Saharan Africa through cutting-edge technology. Our AI-powered, IoT-driven water monitoring systems are ensuring continuous access to clean water in regions most affected by climate change and water scarcity. We are committed to creating sustainable, long-term solutions for the most vulnerable communities.
We are on a mission to revolutionize water quality monitoring, especially in regions where contamination threatens community water supplies. We stand at the intersection of technology, community empowerment, and environmental justice, with a deep commitment to making clean water accessible to everyone.
Our Technology: AI and IoT for Water Resilience
Our technology leverages Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor water infrastructure in real time. These sensors gather crucial data on water flow rates, pump functionality, and environmental conditions, which is processed through our AI system. This data helps predict system breakdowns, ensures timely maintenance, and enables optimal water exploration, preventing over-extraction of resources.
Our integrated mobile app provides real-time data visualization, empowering communities to manage their water systems and report issues proactively.
What Sets It Apart?
Cutting-Edge Technology
Our project harnesses the potential of IoT sensor networks and AI algorithms to continuously monitor water quality in real-time, enabling swift detection of contamination events..
Community Empowerment
We believe in the power of local communities. Through Citizen Science, we actively involve community members in data collection, analysis, and advocacy, fostering a sense of ownership over their water resources.
Open-Source Commitment
Our moni operates on open source principles, promoting transparency, collaboration, and accessibility. We invite individuals, organizations, and developers to join us in this open journey
Climate Justice
Our focus extends to marginalized communities grappling with environmental injustice. We strive to create a more equitable and sustainable future where everyone benefits from clean water.
WHY SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA? Addressing Urgent Needs
Our work is focused on sub-Saharan Africa, beginning in Nigeria, a country severely impacted by climate change-induced water scarcity. According to the United Nations, over 60 million Nigerians lack access to clean water, leaving communities vulnerable to waterborne diseases. In 2023 alone, cholera outbreaks claimed over 1,000 lives due to contaminated water sources.
Despite various efforts, many regions still experience frequent failures in water infrastructure, causing prolonged water shortages. Women and children are disproportionately affected, often spending hours daily searching for water. Our solution tackles these issues head-on by ensuring reliable water access, reducing disease rates, and improving the overall quality of life.
By 2030, we aim to reach over 5 million people across sub-Saharan Africa with our water monitoring systems. Our goal is to reduce infrastructure failures by 80%, cut waterborne diseases like cholera by 50%, and empower communities to take ownership of their water resources through our mobile app. This will not only improve public health but also contribute to climate resilience by ensuring sustainable water use and protecting local aquifers.
OUR TEAM: From the Communities We Serve
Our team is made up of individuals from the very communities we serve, giving us first hand insight into the challenges faced by those affected by water scarcity. Led by Ichor Joshua, a geologist and founder of Geotek, the team includes experts in water systems, IoT technology, community development, and finance. Together, we bring world-class expertise and local knowledge to deliver impactful solutions.
Our work has been recognized globally, including at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) 2022 and 2023, and through prestigious awards such as the 776 Foundation Fellowship, Swarovski Foundation: Creatives for Our Future, Young Climate Prize, and the Grand Challenges Canada Award. In 2023, our journey was featured in the BBC documentary “The Climate and Us,” highlighting our work in addressing water scarcity and building climate resilience in Nigeria.
